Don't Forget: Novak Committed Treason
As those of you paying attention to the news have heard, Time magazine is handing over notes regarding Matt Cooper's handling of the Veronica Plame story. I don't know if I agree with this move, but there's one satisfaction: it'll expose the sources and hopefully make the bastards who outed Plame responsible for their treasonous actions.
My politics are very libertarian and I'm a big First Amendment junkie, but every time I hear about the Plame case I grow angry because I realize that somebody crossed the line. All the current talk about chilling effect and the sanctity of sources can be argued, just so long as the government holds Robert Novak and his White House sources accountable for outing a CIA operative in the field - and in doing so, endangering her life and the lives of those she associated with.
Just think about it. If I were to give the name of someone working undercover for the U.S. government, I'd be sent to jail and branded a traitor. And by definition, that'd be correct. Bob Novak has not been jailed, is not facing the courts, and yet two reporters who followed up on his reportage are facing their own jail time. Something's seriously wrong here and it needs to be sorted out.
I really don't have much more to say about this. It's such a simple, straightforward matter - at least in Novak's case - that all one can do is hope that a sense of justice will eventually prevail and the bastard does time in jail or is executed. (I may have liberal tendencies, but treason's still treason and capital punishment is applicable.)
